Probably the w...I would just say no to the 9 patch. Probably the worst block to start anyone on. Requires precise cutting, which beginners aren't used to, precise seams, again not great for beginners, and precise nesting. Any block that doesn't require all of those at the same time would be great. Like blocks with HST's. those you can make a bit bigger then trim to size which I think is helpful. So pinwheels, Ohio Stars or wonky stars. Improv, paper piece, strip piecing. Log cabin, wonky log cabin, improv curves, feathers, those triangle/tulip blocks, the stack of books block.
