As the new quilter that I am I don't have any fancy blocks for you, but they are still pretty! I've been doing the Skill Builder Sampler and the Beginners Quilt Along! I hope you like them!

My first quilting class was how to cut and use a rotary cutter, getting the grain of fabric and how and why you should always square your blocks - knowing the right way set a course that has taken me a long way. I'm a follower of your blog! What helped me the most when I got started .... is taking a beginner's class. I learned so much. It definitely took me from an intimidated beginner to a confident beginner. We not only conquered the basics, but made many types of star blocks. Half-square and quarter-square triangles, LeMoyne stars with Y seams, etc. The fabrics for the giveaway are really pretty. Thanks to you and Julie for making this possible.

Your blocks are fantastic! I would never know you were a beginner. Taking a quilting class at my LQS is what helped me the most when I started out less than 2 yrs ago. After that, the online community and my local Modern Quilt Guild has been a source of reference and inspiration.
I love The Intrepid Thread and I subscribe to their newsletter. My favorite fabric at The Intrepid Thread that I need to purchase is some Essex Linen. I am so glad she is starting to carry that.

Answer to your#2 question:
I started quilting 1999 so they are not hardly anything on the internet back then for quilters. What helped me most was joining a quilt guild. The show and tell was very inspirational and I could ask anyone any question I had about quilting. Plus I got to hear some great speakers who I learned from. google quilt guilds and you might fined one in your area. There are lots of Modern quilt guilds springing up all over too. I just joined one in my area.

You did a fantastic job on your blocks. I started a little over a year ago. I would spend hours pouring over tutorials on blogs.
What helped me the most was my grandmother. Next came a great lady at the only quilt shop in the area ( now closed). Finally, my dad who told me that I could achieve whatever I set my mind to. Without those three people and the magazines, I would not have started quilting. Now I continue to quilt b/c of encouragement from guild members and quilting friends.

Wow, you put together so many blocks for the hop! I posted yesterday for my first hop too. I really like your bow tie block. I haven't tried that pattern yet, but maybe I'll join along with the beginning quilters link you posted. When I first started, I think both my mom and my seam ripper helped me the most. Love your blocks! The thing that helped me the most as a new quilter was doing Saturday Sampler blocks at Sauder Village. They taught me a lot of the basic things that help me today.
I've found all the online tutorials and videos most helpful! Also, my library has a lot of quilting resources too!
I like the "Nursery Versery Piggies" prints! I can't decide which color is cutest! Pink maybe!
I first started quiltinig back in the 90s and I learned everything from a book - I just read and studied the illustrations until I figured everything out. I was pretty successful, but lost interest after one quilt and a wallhanging. I love the cheery dots on your beautiful blocks. They didn't have the fantastic blogs or the easy tools when I started quilting back in the early 70s, but my inspiration came from my grandmother's quilts and my love of math!!!!

I would say what helped me most was reading different quilting books. I started out making scrap quilts (from fabric that I had made clothes with) that were just same sized squares sewed together randomly. These are still my families favorite quilts. Thanks for the great giveaway.

When I first learned how to quilt, I really didn't think I'd get into it, but then soon afqter that- well maybe a year or so, I was hooked. I didn't do blogger back then.
We moved to a small neighborhood in the country and I found out one neighbor was a quilter, another was a sewer-became a quilter, and the 3 of us just inspired each other and traded patterns for a while. Now I long arm quilt also as a "business" and design patterns, I'm ADDICTED!! my all time favorite beginner pattern was Yellow brick road... I made a TON of quilts from that pattern, super easy with 6 FQs and optional border fabric.

I am following you. When I first started quilting, what helped me the most is that every night when I went to bed, I pulled up to my chin a quilt my grandmother and great-aunt had made for me. Generational motivation! As years passed and I kept learning more and more about quilting, I would tuck my sons in at night with quilts my mother (THEIR grandmother!) had made for them!
When I first learned to quilt I joined a group of ladies who meet once a week. They have encouraged and guided me these last 3 years and I have learned so much from them. I love your blocks, especially the pinwheels and bow tie.

I first started quilting fifteen years ago, from a book published in black and white with lines drawings. I couldn't possibly tell you the title of it now...
The online quilting community wasn't as nearly developed back then, and even if it had been, I just didn't have access. So, I was helped along by being fearless. I didn't look at an illustration and think, 'That's way too hard!' In fact, my first large project was a hand-pieced, hand-quilted Double Wedding Ring.
I think that attitude has stuck with me, and really kept me going, because I watch the flow of ideas online and find myself evolving and trying new ideas and challenges, rather than limiting myself and my skill set.
I first learned to sew and quilt from my mother at a very young age. However, over the past several years I have gotten a lot of help and inspiration from our local quilt guild.

I love your blocks, I am a follower. When I first became a quilter what helped me the most was joining a quilt guild and meeting other women who quilted. One women Carolyn Burgess had a beginners quilt class at her home and I got to meet other women and we have been hanging out every since until we started our own Quilting Bee and we learn from each other. I first started quilting when I found a new quilt shop a mile down the road from my job. Then I went to a quilt retreat and met an amazing group of ladies who helped me make my first ever pieced mystery quilt. Then I joined a bi-weekly quilt group that just gets together and works on whatever. They always like to impart their knowledge when I get stuck.

I already follow Julie. I love her shop and shop there way too often for the benefit of a good balanced budget. I keep skimping on food so I can buy more fabric.

I'm a follower! What helped me most when I started quilting was my quilting friends! We started a bee with the women who were in the quilt class I took - and we're still a bee 20 years later! Love the dots! Reading quilting books helped me a lot. Also I found talking to quilters at different shows, getting tips from them and even visiting quilt shops was a great help for me. The ladies there were always ready to answer my questions.
I've been sewing for 60 years and quilting for 2. I think my sewing background helped me the most. I already understood fabric and colors. I've been a blogger for 6 years, and quilting bloggers are a great resource.
I quilted for a few years before I took a class. I learned a lot from magazines and library books. I am sure taking the class was helpful, mostly I enjoyed sewing with other people and learning new blocks.

When I first started quilting there wasn't an online anything. Ok, that's an exaggeration, but computers weren't super common in homes and thecinternet was just for scientists and the military! Thank god that changed! So my biggest teacher was books and I still live to curl up with a good one.

Just followed your blog. LOVE IT! My grandma transformed old clothes into BEAUTIFUL quilts. The piecing was done by machine and the rest was entirely by hand. I tried to learn to quilt by reading, but ended up taking a beginning quilting class from my local quilting shop. I learned A LOT! Now, I'm kinda hooked. I love the blogs and tuts online!!

It's hard to pick just one favorite fabric from Intrepid Thread because Julie always seems to have the latest and greatest fabrics out there. But today I am loving Serenade - Foliage in Sienna by Kate Spain. In addition to being a fan of most things Kate designs, I like this one because it makes me think of fall and cooler weather which is nice in the 100 degree heat!

The thing that helped me the most was joining a beginning quilt class, then a quilting class, then a binding class. If I hadn't had instruction the whole way I would have given up on my first quilt.

I am now a follower. What helped me the most when I started out was taking classes at my LQS. There were no blogs or tutorials when I started quilting.
I used Cluck Cluck Sew and Crazy Mom Quilts to learn to quilt. I also paid a lady in my neighborhood to teach me how to bind. It cost $10 and was worth ten times as much.

My favorite fabric is Wrenly Christmas on Janes site, I'm also a new follower of both your sites!
I just ordered some fabric from her yesterday during her July 4th sale. I love the little cardinal fabric for Christmas. That's what got me started, but of course I added other fabrics, too;)

Good question When I first started, there was no one to ask for help, but I used to think that sewing was "playing" with the sewing machine, and that attitude of fun is what keeps me making quilts. Now, my inspiration often comes from reading blogs and studying tutorials.

I started working in a quilt shop a couple of months after I started learning to quilt. I was there late nights watching classes be taught and people sewing. That, plus my mother-in-law who got me started, was invaluable for learning techniques as a new quilter.
I'm a new follower (always looking for more craft/sewing blogs!) and even though I'm not a quilter (I sew dolls and animals, not quilts--yet!) I've found that blogs/blogging really keeps me excited about what I'm making (and makes me want to take my time and perfect my skills, since I'll be showing it off on my blog).

I forgot to mention congrats on your 50th post!!!! I just did some shopping yesterday at the Intrepid Thread and ordered the It's A Shore Thing full fat quarter bundle! I've been wanting that collection for awhile! I think my next fave would have to be the Dress Up Days collection and also Bukhara!

Actually, I've sewed forever but my DIL got me into piecing, FMQ and the whole quilting scene. Then blogs have opened my eyes to so much more. Finally I did get involved with our local guild and have attended several classes and retreats. But if it hadn't been for Happy Quilting Melissa, I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing today.
The fabric line that I am loving right now is It's a Shore Thing - Fat Quarter Bundle Sand and Navy
So cute and would be perfect for a boys quilt :)

I started quilting because my sister encouraged me to read Madame Samm's Sew We Quilt blog during the Wantobe Quilters Campaign. I learned sew much from all the wonderful ladies there.
I am a new follower.
I am a beginner too, I did as you are doing, I found a blogger and followed them daily and did all the tutes! I also found a beginners book and joined my local Modern Quilt Guild, there is alot of help and support there. I even learned to Long Arm quilt for free. I have to completely agree about Julie at The Intrepid Thread... I browse her online shop every day, looking to plan quilts to make! I absolutely love her customer service, and those handwritten notes are AWESOME!!
I just started following you today, since I was referred to your site by The Intrepid Thread. I have just started quilting in the last two months, and the main thing that helped me to do this were Jenny Doan's youtube tutorials! I took her online craftsy classes too. She made it look doable, and took the intimidation right out of the equation for me! Now I have to say that it is the quilting/sewing blogging community that is helping me to stretch myself!

I just subscribed to your newsletter/blog. I am very new to this blogging thing and I am still very unsure of what I am doing, but I want to win this fabric bundle!!!! So, here is what helped me when I started quilting...I am very tenacious and I love instant gratification, so I went looking for quilting books/patterns and found "Trip Around the World" from Eleanor Burns, in it she said you could finish the quilt in a day. Needless to say I left the store with the book and the fabrics and I actually did my first "entire" quilt in a day. From cutting to quilting and binding, everything!!! Doing it all in one day gave me the confidence and resolve to continue quilting, that was over 20 years ago. So keep at it, it is an extremely rewarding activity, relaxing and as a bonus you get to practice your math!!! God bless!

My best help when I was learning to quilt was trial and error...I learn best by 'doing' so needless to say in the early days there was quite a bit of seam ripping [which I hate] great encouragement to match seams, pin and stitch correctly the first time. :)
