My Aunt taught me how to machine piece and then she saw how much I liked it that she bought me a sewing machine. Since then, I have taught myself mostly from online tutorials and videos.

My Great Aunt Nanny put a piece of fabric and needle and thread in my hands when I was 5 or 6. that was my first and only lesson. I always wanted to learn to sew on a sewing machine. My Grandmother owned a drapery shop and I was in awe of her machine and supplies, but she was running a business and had no time to really show me anything. BUT, When i was 21 she bought me a machine just like hers for my birthday. I have been self taught ever since. I mostly did curtains and home decs. I made a few very simple baby quilts along the way, having no clue what I was doing. I guess it had been in the last 2 years that I have really learned how to quilt, thanks to the internet and a few books. thanks for the giveaway and your son is very handsome!

Kelie, this is so nice of you! My dad was a tailor before retiring. I also wanted to learn to sew but he had no patience with me! When I got married, my husband's grandmother had an old Singer that she gave me. I bought some books and taught myself. Over the years, my dad had given me a few pointers but he claims we quilters do everything wrong!!

Carin@Ullhärvan said...

I learnt to sew in school I think. My grandfather was a tailor and I was always so curious about the shop and the work there.

Just found your blog from The Amateur Quilter.

How did I learn to sew? With lots of yelling! My mom had no patience as a teacher. When I wanted to learn to use her machine she basically said, "Have at it!" and went to the other room with a glass of tea. I would holler in and ask her questions and she would holler back. I was making clothes for myself and my sisters dolls by the time I was 8.

This method must have worked okay because I was totally disgusted to get an award in 7th grade Home Ec as the top student. Everyone else made those pre-stamped pillows. I made a baby outfit that was self-lined and had button holes.

I will make a post later about your give away but I warn you I have very few followers!

Thanks for the chance!

I've been reading your blog for a few weeks now, but just today realized I wasn't technically a follower yet. Subscribing to a blog with RSS Google Reader doesn't count - so I rectified it :) I am now officially following you.

I learned to quilt very recently - this last fall in fact. I chanced upon a blog post that linked to Chasing Cottons' Quilt Class 101 (http://chasingcottons.blogspot.com/p/quilt-class-101.html). Being the chicken that I am, I didn't immediately start quilting...I read each new entry, week after week, convincing myself that I could do it, if I only tried. After the series was over, I did finally start, and I was really prepared and knowledgeable and comfortable, and had no problems. I've made 4 half-square-triangle quilts so far with what I learned, each one nicer than the last. You should check it out - it really helped me.

Also, Sew Bittersweet had a Vintage Christmas Sampler quilt-along (http://blog.sewbittersweetdesigns.com/?p=126) last year that was really fun and helped me to learn a variety of techniques and make 20 different blocks. You could easily make the blocks with non-Christmas fabric.

By the way...cute picture of your boy!

Posted your giveaway on my blog and learnt how to link back in the process. Great. While I don't have that many followers there will be some traffic via the FMQ project. Good luck with it all.

My mother sat me down to embroider when I was two and half. I can't imagine what she was thinking--a needle and really sharp scissors in the hands of a two year old?!!! But I loved it and have been doing some form of stitchery and sewing every since.
You do need more followers. I'll be one!

Learned to sew at probably the age of 9 or so in school, and then followed up by sewing barbie clothes at home. Learned quilting much later in life after I started visiting quilting stores and got hooked on a couple of wonderful quilts. Thanks for the giveaway.

I sewed a few things just before I was married (didn't think I'd ever have enough money to buy any new clothes again, tee hee) but I didn't really sew again until I had children and started sewing outfits for them, mostly easy knits. With quilting, I have taught myself and gained so much expertise from all the fabulous online tutorials. It just wouldn't be the same without them!

Strange how one has a LOT of comments when there is a give-away...I suppose we all love the feeling of getting something for nothing! Human nature.... The blanket is fabulous, I am sure my son would love it too! Your son seems precious! Only problem is they grow up so quickly!!

I guess I learned to sew in Jr High Home Ec class. I made most of my clothes in high school, nothing real fancy. I saw a quilt at a flea market and wanted it but sadly couldn't afford it. I looked at it and thought I can make that. NOT! It turned out terrible, but I later took a class and loved my teacher. I took several of her classes through the years. I like the motivation and the friends I meet at classes.

I learned to quilt from a book called "Scrap Quilts" and didn't know any better, so I started with a full-sized bed quilt. We are still using it!!

Good luck with your new blog - I am a follower and can't wait to follow along on your journey!

Aww...he really looks to be enjoying that blanket.

I first learned to sew when I was four from my mom. I sewed clothing until the 70 s when I fell into quilting. Good luck on your sewing journey.

Great giveaway! My mom taught me to sew (and my brother). I don't remember how old I was, but I made clothes for my Barbie and my brother sewed sets for his Star Wars figures.

I'm still learning to sew! My mama tried to teach me when I was a teenager but I just wasn't interested. Then last year my daughter told me she wanted a pretty dress. So began my new passion for sewing/quilting. Your little one is adorable and I know the wonderful feeling of having your craft appreciated by your kids. :) I found a lot of good sewing tips over at 'Missouri Star Quilting company' that's were I go for a lot of my quilting 'how-tos'. good luck with growing your blog and happy sewing...April/Little Mama Hen

Hi! Thanks for the giveaway! Your site is really nice and I like that plush blanket (plus the cutie undercovers).

I learned to sew from my sister, who sewed a lot of her own clothing. I made my own clothes in high school, curtains as a young mom, and only started quilting after my 16 year daughter was born.

I come from a long line of seamstresses so my mother sat my down at about age eight to handsew a red binding around a circular blue red cross cape. After that you couldn't stop me. I took a quilting class in 2010 and rekindled my love of sewing. Now, my husband complains I spend more time sewing than with him.

Hi Keli...My late mother-in-law taught me to quilt. She was covering an old comforter for me; and I thought I better help if I can. So; that is how it all started. Now that was over 25 years ago...doing more of it every day.

New follower welcome to blogland (I blog over at http://jocrazymama.blogspot.com/ )
My Mother (who was a nurse) was an AMAZING seamstress. I grew up not realixing that not every kid could tell Mom they needed a new dress for something and it would appear out of her sewing room!! She only taught me a little, but I knew the basics. Mom has been gone for 8 years now and about a year ago I bought a sewing machine (because the troll guards my Mothers, long story) and I began to 'quilt'! I miss her so, but do feel closer and more connected with her when I sew!

Welcome to blogland, Kelie! You've got a nice blog here, and should get lots of followers soon!

I started sewing when I was eight - my grandmother decided to teach me how to make my school clothes, and the first thing she had me make was a pair of fitted shorts with zipper, darts, and waistband! Oh, those were the days..... I didn't start quilting until a couple of years ago - my grandmother didn't quilt, and I don't think she even owned a quilt! But now it's about all the sewing I do, except for little dresses for my granddaughters!!

PS Love your son's blanket!!

Hi,

I learned to sew sitting on the floor next to my mom sewing me outfits. I would take the scraps and make outfits for my dolls. I just started quilting this year.

I learned to sew from my Mom, my olders sisters, and for projects for 4-H back in the day. I also took 3 years of Home-Ec classes in high school. Don't sew clothing anymore mostly quilts but will be making American Girl Doll clothes soon for my two granddaughters which will be fun. Thanks for the chance to enter your giveaway.

I am a new follower... :-)
I first learned to sew when I was maybe 12 or so... My sister had always been the "craftsy" one in the family, and since we are so close in age (16 months apart) there was a lot of competition going on. She entered a sewing competition at a local store, and I just had to get in on it too.. so with my Mom's help, I made a double-knit polyester pant suit-- complete with a vest! LOL I didn't win, but I did get honorable mention! And my sister came in second, I think... Since then, I've enjoyed sewing things for my 3 girls as they grew up, and also making things for my home!

Thank you for the fun giveaway-- I love blue and purple-- two of my favorite colors!

I first learned to sew when I was about 9 years old from a lady who lived across the street from my brother in Colorado. I was visiting him for a while and the lady across the street asked if I wanted to learn to sew. I said 'Sure!' So, she helped me make a cute little gathered skirt out of red and blue calico fabric. I still have that skirt!

I had a list of "want to learn that before I turn 40".
Making Quilts was at the top. I read a few quilt history books. Big history buff. Saw a few quilts that friends inherited. And soon there after fell in love.
Went to the local quilt shop and signed up for the beginners class (log cabin), Did not know about rotary cutters, or rulers. Since then have lost count of how many quilts I have made. joined our local guild, and belong to a small quilt group. Happily sew for a few causes that are near and dear, and love it all. How wonderful and fun quilting has been for me.

My Mama took me when I was 11 to a ladies house that taught us how to sew. I made my first dress that I still have. I always sat out on a blanket and cut out and made my own Barbie doll clothes as we didn't have money to buy the clothes. I got the doll because I was in the hospital. My Mama dies in Aug. and I decided to start my sewing a little more serious now and I started working on my blog with a whole 23 followers so anyone and everyone come on over I would love to have you!! I'm also having a give away ending Wed. 25th of a Tooth Fairy Pillow I made www.sewcraftykathy.blogspot.com

What a darling little scrap quilt! I love the colors you chose and your boy is adorable. You are well on your way to being a quilter. I joined your site. I haven't read any of the posts so if I repeat something I'm sorry. You asked about basting your quilts...I never baste, I use quilt basting spray that I buy at Joann's not the craft adhesive spray just the quilt basting spray. It works really well for me. I spray some on the backing then on the batting after placing it on the backing then I apply the top and smooth out all the wrinkles. I only do this when I'm going to home machine quilt it or hand quilt it. Good luck and enjoy your quilting journey.

I'm a follower - I tried to enter earlier in the week, but I was in Canada and my new PlayBook wouldn't let me leave a comment (GRRRR!). I learned to sew at my mom's side. I made a few pillows and a pair of pajama pants when I was young and it never stuck with me. In 2002 my niece was born and I made my first quilt, after that I was HOOKED!
